Somewhere between the flagpole and, well, anywhere else in Cape Coral, the road just... stops. Cones stretch to the horizon, the GPS gives up and starts "recalculating," and every detour loops back to the exact intersection you started at. Burrowing Al calls it the Cape Coral Grand Prix. Nobody's winning.

Why Cape Coral feels like one big construction zone right now

Cape Coral has been in near-constant road and utility work for years — widening projects, stormwater upgrades, and the city's long-running canal and pipe replacement program all compete for the same intersections at the same time. Add in routine repaving and private development driveways, and it's easy for a resident to hit three separate detours just crossing town.

Unlike a lot of Florida cities with a grid laid out for easy alternate routes, Cape Coral's canal-heavy layout means there often isn't a good detour — bridges and canal crossings are chokepoints, so closing even one lane near a bridge or a major parkway can back up traffic for blocks. That's exactly the kind of bottleneck Burrowing Al keeps running into near the flagpole.
