The Road Is Sinking

A Cape Coral roadway settled so badly the city put up a sign that just says "ROADWAY DEPRESSION." Burrowing Al went to investigate and found engineers had gone 270 feet down looking for solid ground — loose soil and water contributed to the settlement, and stable ground only showed up after a significant investigation depth. The fix: pumping grout underneath the street, at an estimated cost of up to $500,000.

The engineering report is straightforward: loose soils and water contributed to the settlement, and crews had to dig well beyond what anyone expected before finally hitting stable ground. Burrowing Al's read: "we almost found China."
