Why campaign signs keep disappearing in Cape Coral

Election season in Cape Coral means yard signs everywhere — and, every year, a steady trickle of complaints about signs going missing from public rights-of-way near busy intersections like the one by the flagpole. Some of it is code enforcement quietly clearing signs placed on public property or medians, which the city is allowed to do without much notice. Some of it, residents insist, is just people who don't like a particular candidate helping themselves after dark.

Florida law protects the right to post political signs on private property, but signs planted in the right-of-way — grass strips, medians, near stormwater easements — are fair game for removal. That gray area is exactly where most of Cape Coral's sign mysteries happen, and it's a big part of why nobody can ever prove exactly what happened to any one sign.

Burrowing Al's official theory: a mix of code enforcement, bad weather, and at least one raccoon with strong political opinions. His investigation continues.
